I don't know much as far as pedigrees and bloodlines, Linear Appraisals, Line Breeding, etc. But I'm about to learn. You just can't be blessed with a find like these great goats and then turn them into 'trailer trash' by not following through and keeping them pure. Their history of heavy milk producers is outstanding.
My original plan was just to get more goats for our own milk needs and supplies...soaps, cheeses, drinking milk...just stocking the homestead. But with these ladies, and gent, as well as our own 2 we bought from Linda in April, I will have to start learning the ins and outs of genetics and proper breeding. With 5 ladies on the homestead, milk won't be in short supply for all those projects, that's for sure, but still...there's more to it than that. We will have an excellent potential of having a quality dairy herd starting. I can get by with just Malachi for the breeding for at least 2 seasons, even into 3 really. Surely there will be another great buck in the ranks by then.
Ok. folks, goaters and anyone else with knowledge....I need to start a course in Dairy Goat Pedigree :o) Any ideas where to start?
