Being a Mom...

When I am just a spry (ahem...) 60 years old.....my oldest will be just about my current age, and my youngest will be 21 years old.

Can you hear the creaking of my poor old bones? When I was that young 21 year old, SIXTY was a lifetime away.  And it surely meant retirement homes and walkers.  Shoot, even 40 seemed way over on the rolling-down-the-other-side-of-the-hill stage!  You know what I'm talking about...it's that hill, that old age hill where everything is down hill afterwards. Slow rolling for some, sure, but for others, it's a train without brakes rolling full-bore down the age hill.

And I will be 60.  No doubt a grandmother by that point, LOL.  I never really thought much about age and my children. There is an almost 20 year span between oldest and youngest.  Twenty years! Goodness, I've been a MOM a long time.  My entire adult life has been babies and toddlers. Of course, that is over with now, as my youngest is 5 and hardly worthy of the toddler title anymore.

Don't know why that struck me this morning, it just crept up quietly in my thinking.  I have been a Mom a long while, and most days I feel like I haven't learned a single useful thing in all those years.  Other days I feel I could write a whole series of encyclopedias on raising children....albeit much would still consist of the wrong ways as opposed to the right.

Guess I feel a bit out of sorts with this new found knowledge here. I am still knee-deep in the mothering season of my life, with homeschooling for another 17 years or so ahead of me and the pending season of grandmother-hood...no, no one is expecting around here, I'm just sayin....My wild mommy days are closing behind me I guess.

Well, except that I still have all those years of homeschooling ahead of me...with Wild Child having a good 7 years of school left, Lord give me strength!  Even with my olders, daily life is still full of adventures, and I suppose it would be totally in vain to consider the middles and youngers to be more sedate and calm in their futures, heh? Yeah, my wild days are probably just hitting some momentum at this point.

I don't imagine the future. I don't wonder at various scenarios of 5 years or 10 years down the road, or even 2 years.  I like to live in the moment with this bunch. I feel a sense of sadness thinking of this season coming to an end, even if it is a piece down the road yet.  I know I will replace that sadness with a whole new set of smiles when it's time for the grandmother season.

Still....I'll be 60 when my youngest is 21.  Did you hear that???  That is the proof 60 isn't such an "old" age afterall :o)  Maybe there's another hill past that one, heh? I mean, I still feel like I'm climbing up a steep one...

you're almost as bad as my husband! :-) I still need to remind him that age is only a number in head (and to God) whenever he tries to tell me that he's 'too old'. I'm 41 and he's 54 and we are expecting our third child, due in a month! :-) Oh, by the way, we got married 2003 and we're not getting any younger so we didn't wait long.

My husband is 53 and I am 52 and our youngest is 10, so we're older parents as well.
It makes us determined to stay fit and healthy.
Our oldest (23) experienced us at a different stage of life than our 10 year old did. There are pros and cons with both.
It turns out that our son has two mothers, the other being his older sister. It helps when Mom and Dad are older!
Have a blessed week......Denise

I have been thinking about this lately too Deanna, with my middle one (16) going into high school this fall. My youngest has 2 more years before he hits the high school. It goes by so fast!
I remember when my mom was in her 40's, I swore I would never get that old lol...and here I am half way through my 40's.
I am a grammy already thanks to my oldest daughter (22), and I have a hard time keeping up with toddlers, but love them more than anything!

You will do fine, no matter which hill you are on:)

I am 57, hubby is 61, and our youngest child just turned four Tuesday...we adopted three children after we turned fifty. I'll be well into my 70's before my last one is grown, but like I tell people who gasp at that, I'll be seventy with a grown child, not seventy with a preschooler! The older I get, the more I appreciate my grown children, who step in and do things as my husband and I get older and lose some of our strength.

Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls.
